Where Are They Now? Parsley.

Posted by Admin On November - 16 - 2010

Awwww, look at Parsley, what a chubby bun. Here’s what her bunny-Mom has to say:

Hi!
A few years ago I adopted a big wonderful bunny from you named Parsley. She’s doing great! From the second she arrived she declared the livingroom couch her personal lounging spot. It’s taken a while, but now she allows us on too! She’s such a smart funny bunny and she couldn’t be loved more.

Where Are They Now? Dutch Pumpkin. (Lola)

Posted by Admin On November - 14 - 2010

Meet Dutch Pumpkin, an adorable little lionhead dutch girl. Here’s her Adoptive Mom Melissa describing her:

I adopted Dutch Pumpkin from you back in February, her new name is Lola. She was definitely a slow to warm up bunny, it took her a good few months to just get used to me. She’s still quite cage aggressive, but once I get her out (with gloved hands haha) she’s a sweetheart. She’s been doing very well since adoption and certainly has grown!

You might recall that I had a male rabbit at home that I wanted to bond her with. In short, it didn’t go very well. Every time I tried they would fight, pulling chunks of fur out of each other. It was a quite a frightening experience, and after a number of tries over a few months, I lost hope. I began thinking, though, that since Lola took so long to warm up to me, maybe it was the same with my male bun. In the meantime I made her an extension off of the male’s cage where they share a wall (its a connecting cube cage) and by the way the two of them act now, you’d think they were in love! They always go by the shared wall and sit next to each other, and when the boy is out he will not leave her side of the cage. He will lay there against one of her walls and she’ll lay right next to him! I even catch them giving each other little “kisses” sometimes.

I thought these were all good signs, but one day when the boy was out, Lola accidentally found a way to sneak out of her cage and they were running all over the living room fighting again. I’m not really sure what’s going to happen with these two, but for now they seem content living separate, but close to each other. She’s a very spunky bunny, but always makes me smile and she is a sweetie at heart. I attached a couple of pictures for you, one with just Lola and the other shows her laying next to the boy like I spoke about.

I hope everything is going well at the hollow, and I’m happy to have the chance to let you know that Dutch Pumpkin is living a very happy, comfortable life here!

Where Are They Now? Porkchop.

Posted by Admin On November - 11 - 2010
Here’s a great story about Porkchop. This just about sums up why Hop A Long Hollow is in existence.
Three-ish years ago, I adopted Porkchop - the grey bunny in the photo, I didn’t rename him - from Hop-A-Long.  Shortly after his adoption he bonded with the white angora in the photo (she was from Sweet Binks shelter, also in RI)- we named her Applesauce (of course!).  Applesauce was much older than Choppie, and recently passed.  Porkchop is currently bonding with a new bunny (ChouChou), another angora (he picked her; apparently he has specific tastes!) and is doing really well.
On a side note, ChouChou is from the Canadian “Great Rabbit Rescue ” - I read on your blog you have a couple of those bunnies as well.  Porkchop and his mate are free range.  He and ChouChou have their own room and when my husband and I are around they are allowed to roam the 1st floor, but they usually stick to their own space.  Porkchop has been such a great addition to our family.  He is full of personality and he’s been a perfect “bunny diplomat” for friends and family who didn’t know much about house rabbits.  He is really laid back and deals well with my crazy dog (always supervised, of course) and my nieces and nephews all love hanging out on the floor with him.  Our vet says he’s one of the coolest and healthiest bunnies she’s ever seen.

I’ve had rabbits for a number of years and when I adopted Porkchop, I was not in the market for a new pet.  I had a lop-eared bunny named Pickles who had passed and my husband and I were just settling into our first house.  I was actually looking for a place to donate Pickles’ food and toys, figuring I’d take a break from pets in general.  But then I saw Porkchop’s picture on Petfinder and immediately felt a connection.  My husband thought I was crazy, but I drove the 2 hours down to Hop-Along, knowing in my heart that I was going to fall in love with Porkchop.  As I predicted, we connected immediately and I brought him home that day.  I can’t really describe the bond we share.  He’s not the most affectionate or snuggly bunny I’ve ever had, but every time I see him, I smile and I just know that he belongs with me. My husband and I joke that if we were ever to separate, we’d have to go to court over the dog and the cat, but there’s never any question that Choppie is all mine.  I’ve loved all my rabbits, but there’s just something really special about Porkchop.

So, thank you for all the hard work you and your volunteers do.  I know the work can be heartbreaking and it’s sometimes hard to feel optimistic.  But know that there are many of us out there who have found a fuzzy soul-mate because of what you do.  And I am so very grateful to you and you shelter for helping me to find mine.

Where Are They Now? Bunnicula, Frankenbun, and Vampyra.

How awesome is this? A bonded Hollow Trio! Check out their story below:

I have three adopted bunnies from Hop A Long Hollow. Bunnicula, who was named Sam while at the shelter, was given up for adoption when she was between 6 months and 1 year old, because her owner, an 11-year old boy, could not manage his asthma. Bunnicula, a gray lop, was one of the first rabbits adopted from the shelter, in March of 2005 (she was a birthday present to myself). I named her Bunnicula after the children’s book.

In June of 2006, Frankenbun (aka Rusty), joined our family. He is a tan dwarf male. He and Bunnicula bonded quickly. At a visit to the shelter, I fell in love with a silver-gray dwarf female (I don’t remember her shelter name) who came with a bunch of rabbits from a farm in Easton. I named her Vampyra the Bun (Linda’s suggestion in keeping with the theme). (None of the bunnies live up to their names of terror!) Brandee worked with the three rabbits to bond them, which succeeded. Once home, there were a few turf fights between “The Queen” (Bunnicula) and Vampyra, but things quickly settled and all three buns get along well together.

They all share a large cage with a gated play area in my porch-kitchen area. They also get daily runs in a full basement so they can kick their legs. They have been quite healthy, with Bunnicula having a bout with stasis after a small operation to remove a cyst, and Vampyra with a recent skin infection which was cleared up with antibiotics. In general, for rabbit care and info, I have found the House Rabbit Society online to be a great resource.

Where Are They Now - Momo (aka Thumper)

Posted by Admin On November - 7 - 2010

Here’s a super-cute little bunny with some very loving bunny-parents. Here’s what they had to say about Momo:

Momo is doing great, he has grown very comfortable with me(Nobuko) and George and learned some tricks to get his favorite treat, which is organic raisins!! He even learned to hop up on my lap when I tap them, but not without raisins of course! He also learned to jump out into his play area when I come in and tap the floor. He eats very well and in variety and does quality exercise every morning by rushing in and out his cage and play area. I think seeing will tell you much more than writing , so I’ve attached some precious photos of Momo.
